Integrated Pest Management for Cultural Heritage, IPM 2019

The organizers for the IPM 2019 conference would like to thank all participants for a successful event.

The conference was arranged by the Swedish National Heritage Board in collaboration with Nationalmuseum, Swedish Museum of Natural History, Swedish National Archives and the Swedish IPM group PRE-MAL.

Threats by pests to cultural heritage are now more than ever on the agenda for museums, archives, libraries and historic houses. It is therefore important that professionals within the sector, such as scientists, conservators, curators, archivists, librarians, collection managers and others, meet and discuss methods of dealing with the challenges posed by pests. This conference emphasized the following three themes:

• Communicating IPM (day 1)
• IPM in the era of globalisation (day 2)
• IPM in a changing climate (day 3)

During the conference, an open discussion regarding the European restriction of using nitrogen in anoxic pest treatments was hold, led by Christian Baars and Pascal Querner.

The day before the conference, two IPM training courses were arranged, one in English, the other in Swedish, with Pascal Querner and Niklas Apelqvist as tutors.

On the afternoon the third day of the conference, excursions were arranged, with special focus on IPM questions on the sites. The delegates could choose between the Vasa Museum, the Swedish National Archives, the Swedish Museum of Natural History, the National Library of Sweden, the Hallwyl Museum, the Nordic Museum and the Royal Palace and the Royal Collections Department. On the day after the conference, an extra one-day excursion was arranged to Skokloster castle outside Stockholm.

The next international IPM conferences that will follow are Pest Oddyssey 2021 in London and IPM 2024 in Berlin.
